Description
We are seeking a compassionate and dependable PRN School Nurse to join our school’s health office team. This position provides nursing support on an as-needed basis, delivering direct student care, supporting established school health policies and services, and helping ensure the well-being and safety of all students while on campus. With a flexible schedule and the opportunity to provide meaningful care in a supportive environment, this role is ideal for nurses seeking additional hours, greater flexibility, or a part-time opportunity that can fit around other personal or professional commitments.
SCHEDULE
Approximately 15–20 hours per week when school is in session, with flexible scheduling and hours varying based on coverage needs. This is a PRN position with no guaranteed minimum hours; schedules are established collaboratively based on school needs and the employee’s availability.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Health Services Support
- Maintain daily operation of the health room during assigned shifts, including monitoring inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
- Follow federal, state, and local health regulations while maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintain accurate documentation including treatment records, immunization records, emergency contacts, and student health information (allergies, accommodations, etc.).
Student Health
- Assess student health needs through observation, screening support, and referral procedures.
- Provide direct nursing care for sick or injured students including assessment, triage, and coordination with emergency services as needed.
- Comply with physician orders for student care and maintain appropriate documentation.
- Administer medications to students in accordance with State Nursing Board regulations.
- Follow and support established individualized health care plans for students with chronic illnesses, conditions requiring emergency protocols, and students who self-administer medications or medical procedures.
Communication and Collaboration
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns arising during assigned shifts, including medication changes and refill needs.
- Coordinate with other Health Office personnel and Administration to ensure continuity of student care between shifts.
- Serve as a resource for the school’s crisis and emergency management team while on campus.
- Carry provided communication resources (two-way radios, CrisisGo mobile app) at all times while on campus.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain current licensure and certifications, including required continuing education.
- Respond to coverage requests in a timely manner and communicate availability proactively.
- Perform other duties as assigned by school administration while prioritizing student care.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Graduate of a State-approved nursing program
- Current, unrestricted, and unencumbered Kentucky nursing license (RN or higher)
- Current BLS and CPR certification (Red Cross or American Heart Association) Working knowledge Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and database management systems
- Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent demands, including frequent inquiries from faculty, parents, and students
- Flexible availability to accommodate varying coverage needs
Preferred
- Previous experience in school nursing
- Knowledge of pediatric health care and school health services
STANDARD WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing throughout the workday
- Daily desk work involves computer and telephone use
- Requires walking throughout campus, both indoors and outdoors, including areas with uneven surfaces and stairs
- Ability to respond quickly and efficiently to injury and illness incidents
- Ability to lift, carry, pull, push, stoop, twist, and/or reach above shoulder height up to forty (40) pounds regularly
- Use of sensory abilities (sight, hearing, touch, smell) daily
