Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute is pioneering world-class care in our community. We are seeking outstanding applicants for a Cardiovascular Surgery Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) with experience in cardiovascular surgery.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will work under the supervision of our cardiovascular surgeons in providing care for cardiac surgery patients in both the inpatient hospital and outpatient clinic settings. They will act also as a patient advocate in all ethical and legal aspects. In addition, the Physician Assistant plans, coordinates, and provides for optimum patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
The Cardiovascular Surgery program at Hoag performs a high volume of heart surgeries with approximately 500 open hearts per year. It is a comprehensive service line encompassing all aspects of cardiovascular surgery including valve, coronary, aortic and arrhythmia surgery and incorporating open and minimally invasive techniques. There is also an outstanding structural heart program partnering with our interventional cardiologists and a renowned aortic center which is multidisciplinary as well.

Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart and Vascular Institute has earned the highest distinction possible, a three-star rating out of three stars, from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for three categories of surgery – isolated aortic valve replacement (AVR), isolated mitral valve replacement and repair (MVRR) and isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
- Works in collaboration with the Cardiovascular Surgeons to provide care of cardiac surgical patients for both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- We are recruiting for operative APPs:
- Operative APPs will assist in the operating room as well as provide patient care outside of the operating room
- Provides clinical, professional expertise and leadership for patients, families and staff members.
- Functions as an expert clinician, consultant, educator and leader in patient care management, ensuring optimal patient care management and outcomes.
- Maintains a system for coordinating the caseload of care throughout the entire continuum of care spanning each clinical area where care is provided and manages each patient’s transition through the system.
- Call Coverage: After hours urgent call coverage will be 1:5 to 1:6 based on current staffing
Education, Training and Experience
- PA Candidates: Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program, Current license in good standing to practice as a Physician Assistant in California along with Continuing Education
- NP Candidates: Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner (NP) program with RNFA certification
- Minimum 1 to 2 years of experience in Cardiac Surgery
- experience in assisting in open heart surgeries including endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting
- Furnishing license issued by the State of California and personal DEA number.
- Current ACLS and BLS.
