Job Summary The Orthopedic Oncology Physician Assistant (PA) - Surgical Specialty (Operative) is a licensed, certified healthcare provider who delivers specialized care to patients with musculoskeletal tumors and oncologic conditions. This role includes prescriptive authority and is credentialed and privileged as an independent provider recognized by Medicare and Medicaid. This position focuses on the evaluation, surgical management, and longitudinal care of patients with benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors. The PA collaborates closely with orthopedic oncology surgeons and a multidisciplinary cancer care team, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, and radiology, to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care across the continuum. Essential Functions of the Role * Performs comprehensive and focused assessments of patients with suspected or confirmed musculoskeletal tumors, including detailed histories and physical examinations. * Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic studies such as X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and biopsies to support oncologic diagnosis and staging. * Assists in complex orthopedic oncology surgical procedures, including tumor resections, limb salvage surgeries, and reconstructive procedures. * Performs procedures within scope of practice, including wound care, drain management, suture removal, and post-surgical care. * Develops and implements individualized, evidence-based treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physicians and oncology specialists. * Manages pre-operative and post-operative care, including inpatient rounding, discharge planning, and outpatient follow-up visits. * Monitors for complications such as infection, tumor recurrence, or post-surgical functional deficits and initiates appropriate interventions. * Educates patients and families on diagnosis, treatment options, surgical recovery, rehabilitation, and long-term surveillance. * Coordinates care across multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity throughout cancer treatment and survivorship. * Maintains accurate, timely, and compliant documentation of patient care and outcomes. * Participates in tumor boards, case reviews, and interdisciplinary planning discussions. * May provide call coverage and support inpatient or emergency consultations as needed. Key Success Factors * Knowledge of orthopedic oncology principles, including tumor biology, staging, and surgical management. * Understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy, oncologic treatment modalities, and reconstructive techniques. * Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic reasoning skills. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially in sensitive patient care situations. * Strong interpersonal and team collaboration abilities within a multidisciplinary oncology environment. * Critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills in high-acuity and complex cases. * Proficiency in electronic medical records and healthcare technology. * Ability to develop and implement comprehensive, patient-centered treatment plans. * Skill in interpreting advanced imaging and pathology reports. Qualifications * Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program. * Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state of Texas. * Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). * Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire or transfer. * *Preferred:* Minimum of 2 years of experience in orthopedic surgery, oncology, surgical specialties, or related fields.
