- Dermatology Nurse Practioner
Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Dermatological Nurse Practitioner (DNP) to join our dermatology practice. Dermatology Nurse Practitioner (DNP) assesses, diagnoses, and treats skin, hair, and nail conditions, managing care plans, performing procedures like biopsies/excisions, prescribing meds, and educating patients, often collaborating with dermatologists in clinics or hospitals for acute/chronic issues, skin cancer, or cosmetic concerns, with responsibilities varying by specialization (pediatric, surgical, cosmetic).
The ideal candidate will possess at least three years of general dermatology experience as a DNP, as well as a strong background in medical office management and patient care. Candidates with experience in dermatology, AllScripts EMR system, and diverse patient populations—including pediatrics, geriatrics, and patients with complex medical conditions—are encouraged to apply.
Requirements
Duties
- Conduct comprehensive skin exams, take health histories, and perform physical assessments.
- Utilize effective techniques to diagnose and treat skin conditions.
- Diagnose and manage conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis, infections, and skin cancer; order and interpret labs. Perform surgical procedures and biopsies to identify diseases and determine appropriate therapies.
- Prescribe topical and oral medications.
- Perform biopsies, cryotherapy, and surgical procedures and excisions such as mole removals, lipomas, and skin cancers.
- Monitor the effectiveness of skin treatments and make necessary improvements or changes.
- Counsel and educate patients on ways to achieve healthy, attractive skin, skincare, disease prevention, and treatment plans.
- Work with dermatologists and other healthcare providers for holistic care.
- Maintain detailed and accurate patient records.
- Refer patients to specialists as needed.
- Must have the ability to work autonomously.
- Handle patient questions and concerns professionally and courteously.
- Regularly attend, participate in and support training and staff meetings for the practice.

Essential Skills
- Proficiency in EMR/EHR systems such as AllScripts and Emma.
- Strong clinical background encompassing medical-surgical nursing, acute care (ICU or Level I Trauma Center experience), emergency medicine, or hospital medicine.
- Experience working with diverse patient populations including pediatrics (pediatric care), geriatrics (memory care/dementia care), hospice & palliative medicine, behavioral health, or assisted living environments.
- Knowledge of medical terminology related to dermatology as well as physiology knowledge pertinent to skin health.
- Ability to perform diagnostic evaluations involving laboratory testing (specimen collection/processing) and medical imaging techniques.
- Familiarity with Workers' Compensation law and utilization review processes is a plus; experience with ICD coding (ICD-10/ICD-9) is required for billing accuracy.
- Excellent communication skills for teaching hospital settings or outpatient clinics; experience working with people with disabilities or developmental disabilities is advantageous.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university
- Master’s Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program
- NP Certification
- Current NP license for Virginia
- Nurse Practitioner: 3 years in dermatology as a DNP
Supervisory Responsibility
This role has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This job operates in a clinical setting of a medical practice with routine exposure to those who may have contagious illnesses. This role routinely requires walking to and from the patient sitting area to exam rooms and frequent sitting and standing while documenting in patient’s charts. It also utilizes standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. There is frequent patient contact.

- This is primarily a non-sedentary role that involves frequent standing and walking. It requires the ability to walk regularly on a level surface for extended periods, including to and from the patient waiting area and exam rooms.
- This position may also require reaching above shoulder height or below the waist, as well as lifting as needed to file documents and retrieve medical supplies throughout the workday.
- Proper lifting techniques are necessary for weights up to 10 pounds.
- Perform tasks involving simple hand grasping, fine hand manipulation, and reaching, such as handling paperwork, operating a computer, and using, storing, and cleaning medical instruments.
- Maintain sufficient communication skills through sight, hearing, or other means to perform assigned duties and ensure proper job safety conditions.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Clinical hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Candidates must work 4 of the 5 days.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance
Must be authorized to work in the United States of America. Must acknowledge and agree to the Practice’s policies including the drug and alcohol policies.
