THE CAMP NURSE SCOPE OF WORK:
The Camp Nurse is responsible for overseeing the health, safety, and wellness of campers, staff, and guests. In keeping with guidance from the American Camp Association and the American Association of Pediatrics, Camp Dogwood does not accept non-medical vaccination exemptions.
All campers and staff at Camp Dogwood must be fully vaccinated. Additionally, all staff wear a camp uniform, consisting of a camp polo shirt (2 will be provided by the camp) and khaki pants or shorts and closed toed shoes.
THE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE CAMP NURSE WILL INCLUDE:
Provide healthcare to meet the individual needs of camp staff, campers, and guests.
Collaborate with other medical staff to meet medical needs.
Follow health care policies/procedures as described in the Healthcare section of Staff and Operations Manuals and treatment procedures.
Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.
Help set up the Camp Health Center.
Check inventory and order all necessary medical supplies and equipment.
Form a relationship with the local Doctor's office (Madison Primary Care)
Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to state and American Camp Association Standards.
Coordinate with other Camp Nurses and ensure that health care procedures and policies are being strictly followed, including the accurate reporting of any health cases among campers and staff.
Ensure staff and camper health examinations are current and on file.
Review daily medical log for treatment and medications.
Review insurance and accident report form or prepare forms if necessary.
Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies.
Check with other Camp Nurses on inventory and usage of first aid kits throughout Camp.
Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed.
Ensure a staff orientation session is delivered on medical services.
Ensure camp staff and campers know their role related to health care and first aid.
Supplement orientation includes standing orders, clinic hours, specific camper health and social needs, health center procedures, emergency procedures, staff health assessment of campers, transportation to outside health facilities, accident prevention and risk management, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting.
Screen all campers and staff who are arriving and departing Camp.
Verify health history and examination.
Verify emergency authorization.
Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases.
Conduct a health assessment.
Keep all medications used by campers and staff.
Supervise sanitary conditions throughout Camp.
Observe daily cleanliness in the foodservice facility and other areas throughout Camp.
Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Director of Summer Residential Programs.
THE CAMP NURSE WILL PERFORM THE FOLLOWING OTHER DUTIES:
Perform any tasks beyond those assigned as help is needed.
Provide leadership in the Camp's risk management program.
Develop a resource file and obtain information and/or literature concerning health in the camp community.
Be responsible for contacting parents concerning the status of their child's health by telephone in the following situations: any injury requiring an x-ray, illness requiring an infirmary stay and emergency treatment/accident, etc.
Be knowledgeable of outside health resources.
Evaluate medical services.
Requirements
THE CAMP NURSE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Training and experience in teaching program to adults and children
Desire and ability to work with children outdoors.
THE CAMP NURSE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING:
Registered Nurse (RN) bachelor’s in nursing
Certified in CPR and Blood-Borne Pathogens Training
Current First aid certification and experience in first aid and emergency management.
Must submit health history record and examination form before the first day of work,
Valid driver's license.
Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care.
Desire to work with children and young adults.
Community health knowledge.
PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF THE JOB:
Ability to lift/assist campers and staff.
Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters.
Ability to use a telephone.
Maintain a written record system.
Ability to quickly get to remote locations on the camp property over uneven terrain.
Observe and assess sanitation and safety conditions of the Camp.
Ability to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concerns.
Possess endurance to meet emergency needs.
Ability to drive to an off-camp health provider, physician, or emergency treatment location.
Some physical requirements of the Camp Nurse position could be endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs; willing to visit a camp regularly and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
